The 5th District Court issues a temporary injunction on the new Calendar Rule so districts will now be allowed to maintain a 4 day school calendar. More information will be forthcoming once school districts are advised on how to proceed to approve the new calendars.

As many of you are aware, the Public Education Department (PED) attempted to implement a rule that required schools to attend 180 days in a school year with 50% of the Fridays to be attended. The New Mexico School Superintendent Association filed a lawsuit in order to stop the implementation of the rule in violation of current state statute and a preliminary hearing was held on Thursday, May 2. On Friday, May 3, a temporary restraining order has been put in place preventing the Department from implementing the rule and another hearing is scheduled form May 13, 2023 for a permanent injunction preventing PED from implementing the rule until the case is resolved. The good news is that as of now, we can proceed as usual, with a 4 Day Calendar, but the bad news is with the pending litigation, the calendar issues will not be resolved until the June Board Meeting with a final calendar that meets these requirements and approved as part of the school's budget for next year. The Superintendent Association feels we are in good position to get the permanent injunction. As more information becomes available, I will let the community know as this will have a major impact if the 180 Day calendar is allowed. Thank you for your support of the schools and the importance of community involvement in this effort because many of you wrote public comment and contacted legislators on how this would impact our community and families. Please feel free to contact me via email at or by calling 575-849-1911.

On Tuesday, April 30, our kindergartners, first graders, and second graders all went to the Smokey the Bear Museum in Capitan. While there, they learned about the true story of Smokey the Bear, Fire Ecology, and the various tools and equipment used by Wildland Firefighters to extinguish wildfires. All of our kids had a great time learning and having fun! They were all so well-behaved that the ranger commented on how impressed she was with their exceptional behavior on multiple occasions. We are so proud of our students!
